Thank you for that thoughtful (as usual) post. I’m curious to know more about how ‘within the space of 24 hours a small bit of upper back pain turned out to be a major evolving myocardial infarction’. How does that work, exactly — I mean, how did your friend realise that it was more than a small bit of upper back pain? I ask because so many men tend ‘self-monitor’ to an extreme degree without being aware of symptoms which could signal something serious.

Glad you’re here and healthy, and I can only hope he regains his health. I have lived that go no more than an hour away from major medical life and am relieved to be able to get a little further away now without having to think about it.

Actually it is the 25th April not May – and few people remember that the Turks lost more men than the allied forces – but yes, a significant event in military history…and a deeply disturbing one

In my youth on a very overcast day at Assateague Island off the coast of Virginia I got sun poisoning so bad my mother didn’t recognize my face when I got home. Sunblock is a very good thing.

Good use of towel for educational purposes! My standard high school grad gift for several years now has been the humble towel, accompanied by a copy of the page from HitchHiker’s Guide to explain the “why” to the un-initiated. Enjoy your travels.

Galveston was wiped off the map by a hurricane about a hundred years ago. When I was 16 we drove out there to visit old friends who had moved there–a beautiful old town. Glad you got to see it.
